TGV: Enumerations & Home shops

To have a better overview about the TGV fleet owned by the SNCF, all units do have their own numbers, first one for the whole train set which one can find at both noses of the TGV train and second a more 'intern' number at each coach which indicates for example if it is a powercar, for which power supply it is equipped etc.

Nummerierung
Photo: TGV-Réseau tricourant
An example: at a TGV-Réseau powercar, there is written: '380049'
-The first '3' says that this train is a triple-voltage one
-The last '9' says, that this is the coach number nine, so it is the second powercar (one counts from '0' to '9')

To be able to recognize quickly as a TGV fan what is actually standing in front of someone, here a rough numbering scheme for all TGV-'types'':
- TGV-PSE 2+3 voltage: 1-118
- TGV-Atlantique: 301-405
- TGV-Réseau 2-voltage: 501-550
- TGV-Réseau 3-voltage: 4501-4530
- TGV-Duplex: 201-268
- TGV-PBA (Thalys): 4531-4540
- TGV-PBKA (Thalys): 4301-4332
- TGV-TMST (ex-Eurostar, SNCF): 3201-3231
- TGV LaPoste (semi-units): 901-907

All TGV trains have their own main shops / depots, where e.g. the maintenance work, repairs, conversions etc. are made.
Therefore, following depots are existing: Sud-Est/Villeneuve-St.Georges, Châtillon, Le Landy (all near Paris) and Le Forest (near Bruxelles).
Their names are usually written right under the trainset number of the TGV, at the noses.

Supplements:
TGV-PSE - nr. 38 was rebuilt into a LaPoste train during 1994
- nr. 88 was needed for TGV-A test runs, later returned to usual services as nr. 118
- nr. 101 was used for tilting tests, it circulated as the TGV-P01 ('Demonstrateur Pendulaire')
- nr. 112 (triple-voltage) is owned by the Swiss Railways SBB
TGV-Réseau
(dual-voltage)
- the semi-unit nr. 502 is used for innovation research like the AGV and for special presentations
TGV-Réseau
(triple-voltage)
- 6 units (nr. 4501 - 4506) are not equipped for Belgium, but for Italy
- nr. 4530 was doing passenger services earlier, now it is used for safety checks of the LGV network (measurements)

The most other units 'missing' in the numbering scheme were scrapped because of heavy damages in e.g. railroad crossing accidents or used to repair other damaged trains, like the second semi-unit of the ex-TGV-Réseau train nr. 502 for repairing a TGV-PBKA being heavily damaged after having hit a lorry standing on the tracks, in Belgium.

The spare power units might be used e.g. when a problem with the 'regular' power unit of a TGV has occured and needs to be repaired in the home shop, but the 'rest' of the train is needed to ensure regular services.

...and which TGV is now exactly where???
With the list above, one can recognize that almost all TGV trains have their home shop / service faciltity at the routes on which they run most of their services. Nevertheless, to avoid e.g. a depot being too much 'overcrowded', one TGV type can be seprated onto different home shops. The following table shows, which TGV is actually belonging to which depot. The annual 'État annuel des engins moteurs' of the French Railways SNCF for the Year 2005 was chosen as reference. In this report all data concerning new locos, coaches, trains are given, what has which home shop, the rolling stock which is new or withdrawn from service, transfers to other home shops and so on.
