The ETR 470 / Cisalpino

A truly international, fast and tilting train, the ETR 470 or better known by its operator's name, 'Cisalpino'! Since 1994, it runs in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, as a triple-voltage train being equipped for 15 kV/16.7 Hz alternating current and 1.5 kV plus 3 kV direct current. The maximum speed was put to only 200 km/h, unlike to its ancestor ETR 460 and its fellow ETR 480 (up to 250 km/h). Due to the tilting technology by Fiat Ferroviaria, now Alstom, the Cisalpino can tilt up to 8° when passing a turn.

One train consists of nine carriages, the engines are spread under the whole floor, similar to the ICE-T or 3 and thus has not got any powercars. The nine gracile Cisalpinos received their beautiful appearance thanks to the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
Incidentally, the translation of the nickname 'Pendolino' for the italian bend-racers is 'little pendulum'... :-)

The ETR 460 (for SLO)

The ancestor of the Cisalpino already mentionned before, the ETR 460, is not only rolling for Italy... other national railways have also made their decisions to buy these reliable, tilting supertrains.
This fact is also matching Slovenia, and their 'Pendolino' is doing e.g. the EuroCity service between Venice, Italy and Maribor, Slovenia.

A closer look onto one of the bogies with the tilting technology. Besides the other ETR-'Pendolino' trains, it is e.g. also the ICE-T 1 (and 2) having such similar bogies by Fiat Ferroviaria/Alstom!
